Year 13 Classical Studies

We will cover three topics in this course:

  • Topic 1 – “The Aeneid” – We will read the Aeneid written by Virgil, and discover the way Augustus linked himself

to the famous founding ancestor Aeneas. In the book we see the mythological reasons for the Punic Wars – hatred between Cathage and Rome, the hardships Aeneas has to face in moving the Trojans to the destined land of Italy.

  • Topic 2 – Alexander the Great – In this topic we will study the career of Alexander the Great including his accession, his military conquests, his relations with the Macedonians, Greeks and Persians, and his religious views.

  • Topic 3 – Roman Art and Architecture – In this topic we study the Art of the Roman Empire: the sculpture (including portraits and historical reliefs), mosaics and public architecture of the Roman Empire from Augustus to Constantine.
